ADA Railing - American Disabilities Act compliant railing
Adjustable Bracket - component which allows for any custom scribing for irregular surfaces (Whitman only)
Adjustable Joiner - adjustable aluminum joiner used for ADA railing
Air Infiltration - the amount of air that passes between a window sash and frame, or a door panel and frame; for windows it is measured in terms of cubic feet of air per minute per square foot of area, and for doors, it is measured in terms of cubic feet of air per minute per foot of crack
Angle Bay Window - a composite of three or more windows, with flanking units projecting from the wall, usually at a 30-degree or 45-degree angle
Astragal - an interior molding attached to one of a pair of doors or sash in order to prevent swinging through; also used with sliding doors to ensure tighter fitting where the doors meet
Awning Window Unit - a combination of frame, one or more operative awning sash weathership, operating device and at the option of the manufacturer screen and/or storm sash assembled as a complete and properly operating unit; unit may contain one or more fixed or nonoperative sash in combination with the operative sash
Balancing - the raising and lowering of sash, as well as holding its position at any desired level; sash activiation
Baluster - evenly spaced railing supports (<4” apart)
Blank post - fence post with no routed holes
Blumount - mounting plate and bolt kit that assists with the installation of the unimount (available for wood or concrete)
Bow Window - three or more individual windows projecting from the wall in a gently curved contour
Box Bay Window - a composite of three or more windows, with flanking units projecting from the wall at a 90-degree angle
Bracket - component used to attach horizontal rails to vertical posts
Bracketmate - a template designed for accurate bracket to post placement
Bracket Wall Return Cover Plate - molded return bracket covers used for ADA railing
Casemenet Sash Unit - a combination of frame, casement sash, weatherstrip and operating device assembled as a complete and properly operating unit; screens and/or storm sash are optional
Casement Window - windows with sash hinged at the sides. It usually swings open by a means of a crank-type hardware system
Column Connector - bracket which connects to a round surface and makes a square face to attach railing brackets
Corner Post - fence post used at any corner; routed on two adjacent sides
Decking - vinyl, reinforced, cellular PVC deck board
Divided Lights - window or door panes separated by bars and muntins
Double Hung Window - consists of two sash, top and bottom, which (1) slide vertically, past each other, (2) are joined by a meeting rail, and (3) are held in any open position by means of weights or one of several types of balancing devides
Drop Rod - stainless steel drop road used for gates
End Loop - 18” x 12” x 18” extruded plastic end loop used for ADA railing
End Post - Fence post used at the end of a run; routed on one side
Extension Jambs - flat parts which are nailed to the inside edges of the window or door frame, so that it will fit a wider wall
Fascia - wide board used for vertical application on decking
Foot - extra support member in center of railing span
Frame - parts which enclose the window or door sash; they are attached to the wood members lining the rough opening
Gate Hinge - adjustable stainless steel hinge used for gates
Gate Latch - stainless steel latch used for gates
Glazing - glass or other transparent materials, used for windows; also the act of installing the glass
Glazing Bead - a strip surrounding the edge of the glass in a window or door; applied to the sash on the outside, the glazing bead holds the glass in place
Glazing Compound - a plastic substance of such consistency that it tends to remain soft and rubbery when used in glazing sash and doors; unlike putty, it resists hardening, cracking and eventually failure
Grille - an ornamental item that visually divides a piece of glass into separate panes
Hand Rail Bracket Kit - powder coated aluminum bracket with molded bracket cover and screws used for ADA railing
Headboard - a flat board cut to fit the contour of a bow or bay window; it is installed between window frame and the surrounding wall surface, to create a kind of ceiling
Header - a horizontal structural member that supports the load over an opening, such as a window or door
Hopper - an upside-down awning window, hinged at the bottom and opening inward from the top; many basement windows are this type. Also frequently referred to as a ranch-type window
Horizontal Sliding Window - consists of two or more sash which slide horizontally past each other, one or more of the sashes may be fixed or inoperative or all sash may operate, the sash comes together and forms a vertical-meeting rail (stile) in a closed position
Jamb - the top and two sides of a door or window frame which contact the door or sash; top jamb and side jambs
Joint Ring - molded ring to join two rails used for ADA railing
Line Post - fence post used in a straight line situation; routed on opposite sides
Lock - hardware which keeps windows or doors shut. (Usage - locks for swinging windows have a “keeper” a protruding, hook-shaped piece attached to inside face of the stile, sliding windows have “latches”, two-piece units attached to adjoining rails.)
Low-Emissivity Glass (LowE) - glass which restricts the passage of radiant head, in and out; a metal and metal oxide coating is either suspended between the two layers of glass, or affixed to one of the panes, separated by a small air space
Multiple-Opening Frame - a window or door frame consisting of at least one mullion
Mullion - the upright or vertial member of dividing the panels in a door; the vertical member of a sash, window or door frame between openings in a multiple-opening frame; the mullion is known as the “mullion center.”
Multiple-Opening Frame - a window or door frame consisting of at least one mullion
Muntin - a short “bar”, horizontal or vertical, extending from a bar to a stile, rail, or another rail
Non-Structural Porch Post - post post only, no hardware
Opening - a discontinuity in an exterior or interior wall to admit a door or window.
Outside Opening (Tip to Tip) - the measurement from outside of a millwork assembly.
Rough Opening - the opening formed by a framing member; “Buck Opening.”
Operator - crank-type hardware for opening a window which swings outward; a jointed, metal arm keeps the window open at any position
Picket - evenly spaced raling supports (<4” apart)
Picket Cap - cap used to finish off top of picket
Porch Rail Kit - horizontal railing option that includes rails, aluminum reinforcement, pickets, brackets, and intructions
Porch Wizard - adjustable porch angle bracket for railing
Post Adapter - acts as a spacer from the outside wall of the pipe to the wall thicknesses of vinyl posts
Post Cap - decorative cover atop post cover
Post Cover - square vinyl extrucion that slips over a 4 x 4 pressure treated post or unimount
Post Return - 16 1/2” x 6” extruded plastic post return used for ADA railing
Post Wrap - 4 Piece wrap used as a post cover
Pour-In-Place - 8” thick window that allows for concrete to be poured around the window eliminating the need for a buck to be built and the window to be installed
R-Value - an industry measurement of the resistance to heat flow through a give material. (Usage - the greater the R-value, the greater the resistance to heat flow.)
Rail - horizontal vinyl which connects between any two posts
Rail End Cap - molded cap to finish rail to wall used for ADA railing
Rail Mount - unit used to mount a rail to a post
Rail with Stiffener - an extruded plastic rail with aluminum stiffener used for ADA railing
Rough Opening - an unfinished wall or ceiling opening, where a window or door will be installed
Rough Sill - the horizontal wood member linking the bottom of a rough opening for a window or door
Sash - a single assembly of stiles and rails into a frame for holding glass, with or without dividing bars or muntins, to fill a given opening; it mayb e either open or glazed
Sash Balance - one of several types of mechanical sash-activation devides; primarily these balances include coiled springs, spiral springs or other spring-types devices for raising and lowering the sash
Sash Clearance - difference between the width of the window frame guide or runway and the sash thickness
Seatboard - a flat board cut to fit the contour of a bow or bay window; it is installed between the sills and the surrounding wall surface, to provide a seat or shelf space
Sheetrock Window - any window large enough to pass a sheet of sheetrock through
Sill - lower, horizontal member of the window or door frame
Single Hung Window - similar to a double hung window with the top sash stationary or nonoperative while the bottom sash operates freely, vertical slider
Size - measurement of millwork items and members
Glass Size - one of the three measurements of a window or sash unit; glass size is measured from stile to stile and from rail to rail inclusive of the muntins and bars and is always in inches; the size of a pane of glass of any sash or door light
Outside Opening Size - measurement from outside to outside of any given item; unit measurement.
Window Opening Size - the dimensions of the window frame required to accomodate the window, in feet and inches.
Window Rough Opening Size - the size of the rough frame wall opening to receive the window or sash unit; given in feet and inches; also the “buck opening.”
Solar Wedge - solar wedge accent light that attaches to most surfaces
Spindle - evenly spaced railing supports (<4” apart)
Stair Rail Kit - vertically adjustable railing option that includes rails, aluminum reinforcement, pickets, brackets, and instruction
Stair Wizard - adjustable stair angle bracket for railing
Stile - the upright or vertical outside pieces of a sash, door, blind, or screen
Stool - a moulded interior trim member serving as a sash or window frame sill cap
Storm Kit - mounting plates for porch posts
Straight Joiner - 6” long straight joiner used for ADA railing
Straight Wall Return Kit - aluminum bracket with molded bracket cover used for ADA railing
Structural Porch Post - porch post with structural mounting hardware
Two-Piece Post Skirt - decorative trim piece surrounding the bottom of the post cover
U-Value - the overall heat transfer rate through a combination of materials; it is measured by the BTU’s (energy units) per hour per square foot per degree of temperature difference. (Usage - the lower the U-value, the lower the heat transfer rate in specified conditions)
Unimount - alternative to a 4 x 4 post that can be lag bolted to an existing deck
Wall Return Kit - powder coated aluminum bracket with molded bracket cover used for ADA railing
Waterborne - high performance single application exterior waterborne coating system designed for direct application to PVC, cellular PVC, fiberlass and aluminum
Weatherstrip - variously shaped metal, vinyl plastic or moulded - fibre strips which fit tightly against the sash or door frame parts to prevent air infiltration through cracks
Window - consists of two or more single sash to fill a given opening; may be open or glazed
Window Frame - a group of wood parts machined and assembled as to form an enclosure and support for a window or sash
Window Jamb - the part of the window frame which surrounds and contacts the window or sash that the frame is intended to support
Window Stop - a moulding to hold the bottom sash of a double hung window in place
22 1/2 Degree Wedge - component which offsets railing angle by 22 1/2 degrees; for use around a gazebo or other angled structure
45 Degree Bracket - component which offers railing angle by 45 degrees (Whitman only)
90 Degree Corner - power coated aluminum 90 degree corner usef for ADA railing
